Natural vs. Organic: What’s Really in Your Skincare?

As more people pay attention to what’s in their skincare, terms like “natural” and “organic” are everywhere from shampoo bottles to facial creams. But do these labels really mean what you think? If you’re aiming for cleaner, safer skincare, understanding the difference between “all natural” and “organic” can help you shop smarter.
What Does “All Natural” Really Mean? The term “natural” is not legally defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means a brand can label a product “natural” even if only one or two ingredients are plant-, mineral-, or animal-based, and the rest are synthetic.
“All Natural” generally implies that every ingredient comes from nature with no synthetic components, but because it’s unregulated, that’s not always the case. Unless the brand is transparent about its formulas, there’s no guarantee.
At The Mobile Spa Girl, we believe in honesty and science-backed skincare. Our featured products often use naturally derived or skin-identical ingredients (meaning they mimic the structure of what’s already in your body). However, we don’t claim “all natural” because some formulas include a safe, synthetic preservative—phenoxyethanol—to prevent bacterial growth and keep your products safe for use.
What Does “Organic” Really Mean? Organic labeling in skincare is more tightly controlled, but not by the FDA it falls under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
To be labeled “organic,” at least 95% of agricultural ingredients must be certified organic—grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or GMOs. If a product says “made with organic ingredients,” it must contain at least 70% certified organic content.
However, not all skincare ingredients can be certified organic, especially those that aren’t agricultural. That’s why creating 100% organic skincare is challenging, and why many products combine organic, naturally derived, and safe synthetic ingredients.
Transparency Is Key Labels can be misleading, and the beauty industry is full of marketing buzzwords. That’s why at The Mobile Spa Girl, we focus on ingredient integrity rather than trendy claims. We recommend products that combine naturally derived, skin-identical, and scientifically supported ingredients that work with your skin’s natural microbiome, not against it.
We may not only suggest products that are “all natural” or “certified organic,” but we do choose ones that are clean, effective, and safe for your skin’s long-term health.
